July Grievances Update

The following grievances have been filed with the company. At this point, the company and Guild will meet to try to resolve these issues. If no resolution is agreed to the grievance returns back to our grievance committee where we can vote to send the issue to arbitration.

Unapproved overtime

The Guild is investigating a situation where a member was disciplined for working “unapproved overtime.”

UPDATE: The grievance committee has moved this matter to arbitration.

Minimum mileage

The Guild is investigating to see if all members have been getting paid the daily/monthly mileage reimbursement correctly.

UPDATE: The Guild and company have reached a settlement on this matter. The company will pay back due minimum mileage for the previous six months (from November 2006) for all affected members. This is consistent with the limited retroactivity in Article X, Section 1. The company has also committed to keeping a closer eye on this matter in the future. The grievance committee moved to dismiss as resolved.

Outsourcing of circulation work

The Guild has filed a grievance on the outsourcing of corporate billing work to outside vendors.

UPDATE: The Guild continues to investigate the company’s claim that it needed to move this work in order to comply with ABC audit standards for coupons. The company has agreed to waive the timelines for filing for arbitration.

The Community Leader

We have filed a grievance based on the recent movement of work and changes made to the Community Leader based primarily on the jurisdiction language in our contract. Some Community Leader work (employees) has been moved inside 390 Congress, some Guild members are now doing Community Leader work, the Community Leader is now being inserted into the Press Herald, and we’re sharing management.   

UPDATE: The Guild has tolled (legal term that sets aside timelines) this issue while the company decides if it wants to negotiate this matter with our lawyer. The Guild is awaiting a response.
