The Guild was given notice this afternoon that there would be four layoffs today. These layoffs occurred shortly thereafter. Guild positions impacted by the layoffs are two Clerk II positions in news, and one classified advisor position and one major account salesperson in advertising. In addition, a position will be lost in the lunchroom closing, as the company announced. Other changes are also in the works and will likely result in at least three further layoffs.
"We are saddened by the news of the layoffs of our colleagues, friends and members," said C.J. Betit, Administrative Officer for the Portland Newspaper Guild. "Upset the company failed to give the required contractual notice so issues could be addressed and discussed, and puzzled by the $132,000 in bonuses paid out to managers in January when our company is in an apparent state of flux."
