Background of the Portland Newspaper Guild

The Portland Newspaper Guild is a member of The Newspaper Guild-CWA. The Guild represents 350 workers at the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. Members work in the news, advertising, circulation, distribution, facilities, maintenance, composing, IT, business office, marketing, and MaineToday departments. The press room is represented by its own union. The Guild also represents 25 workers in the newsroom of the Morning Sentinel in Waterville and workers at Dale Rand Printing in Portland and Laura Marr Printing in Westbrook.

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram was purchased by the Seattle Times Company in November 1998, along with the Kennebec Journal (Augusta, Maine), Morning Sentinel (Waterville, Maine) and Coastal Journal (weekly in Brunswick, Maine), from Guy Gannett Communications, a family-owned company based in Portland, Maine. The Seattle Times Company is 50.5 percent owned by the Blethen family, and 49.5 percent owned by McClatchy. The Maine newspapers are now known collectively as Blethen Maine Newspapers. The Seattle Times also owns the Yakima Herald-Republic, Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and Issaquah Press (weekly) in Washington state. In March of 2008, the Blethens announced they were exploring a sale of the Maine newspapers.
